IFT Therapy
IFT (Interferential Therapy) is an electrotherapy treatment commonly used in physiotherapy to help manage pain, muscle discomfort, and certain movement-related problems. It uses two or more low-frequency electrical currents that intersect within the targeted area, producing an interferential current that can stimulate tissues beneath the skin.
IFT is generally used as a supportive treatment alongside other physiotherapy techniques. Depending on the patient's condition, it may help reduce pain, decrease muscle spasm, improve local circulation, and make movement or therapeutic exercise more comfortable.
How IFT Therapy Works
During IFT treatment, the physiotherapist places small electrode pads on or around the affected area. The physiotherapy machine delivers controlled electrical currents through these electrodes. The currents interact within the tissues to produce the desired therapeutic stimulation.
The intensity of the current is adjusted according to the treatment objective and the patient's comfort. Patients commonly feel a gentle tingling or vibrating sensation during treatment. The intensity should remain comfortable and should not normally feel excessively painful.
IFT may be selected when pain or muscle discomfort is making it difficult for a patient to participate fully in active rehabilitation. By helping manage symptoms, it can allow the patient to perform prescribed exercises and movement more comfortably.
Conditions That May Benefit
Depending on the physiotherapist's assessment, IFT may be incorporated into treatment for:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Back and lower-back pain
- Shoulder pain
- Knee pain
- Joint discomfort
- Muscle spasms
- Muscle tightness
- Sports-related injuries
- Soft-tissue injuries
- Certain chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions
- Pain associated with reduced mobility
Benefits of IFT Therapy
When appropriately prescribed, IFT may help:
- Reduce the sensation of pain
- Relieve muscle tension and spasm
- Improve local circulation
- Support relaxation of affected muscles
- Make movement more comfortable
- Assist patients in performing therapeutic exercises
- Support overall physiotherapy rehabilitation
What to Expect During Treatment
Before starting IFT, the physiotherapist evaluates your symptoms and determines the appropriate treatment area and electrical stimulation settings.
Electrode pads are placed on clean skin around the affected region. The machine is then switched on and the intensity is gradually adjusted. You may feel a mild tingling, pulsing, or vibrating sensation.
The treatment duration and electrical settings vary according to the patient's condition and treatment goals. Your physiotherapist monitors your response throughout the session and makes adjustments when required.
IFT as Part of Physiotherapy
IFT therapy is generally used as one component of a comprehensive physiotherapy treatment plan, rather than as a standalone treatment. Depending on your condition, it may be combined with manual therapy, stretching, strengthening exercises, mobility training, posture correction, and other rehabilitation techniques.
At our physiotherapy clinic, IFT Therapy is provided following an individual assessment. Our physiotherapists select appropriate treatment parameters based on your symptoms, condition, and rehabilitation goals, with the aim of helping manage pain, improve comfort, and support your return to normal movement and daily activities.
